you know what others are thinking? I never said it was no big deal. I just pointed out that such contingency planning has been government policy ever since the hey day of the Cold War.

Every President from Eisenhower onward has left it unchanged. After 60 plus years, it's clear that the fact that it's on the books tells you nothing about the imminence of its activation. It also indicates that the current President's responsibility is no greater than that of his predecessors.

None of which makes it okay. It does show that the threat is systemic and longstanding, rather than some new, radical departure.

If recognizing this undermines the current criticism of the policy, that can only be so if the critics have been making arguments that have ignored this history. In which case they have shot themselves in the foot by making faulty, ahistorical criticisms. That's their own responsibility and no fault of those who point out the facts.

Nothing human is alien to me.
