  •  where the press is... (4.00) in YOUR HOME TOWN. If you want to get the word out, you will do it locally, as inclusiveheart says. The best way to get past "the filter" is to give up hope on the national media and give local media something to chew on. You want to stage an action? STAGE IT LOCALLY. The summer is known as "the silly season" in the news biz. Stations are desperate for something to report on. I know; I was a producer for years. Give them something, they'll thank you for it. Unless, of course, they're owned by Sinclair.

      great advice.
    •  Please do write a diary on this point! (none)
Got a list of dos and don'ts for getting local media attention?

The point can't be emphasized enough. The national media: rigidly choreographed, impermeable.

Meanwhile, a lot of people read their local papers, especially in rural and suburban areas (those elusive red areas), people with kids (you know, those elusive security moms) because they print the local sports scores and print photos of local school and charity events.

All those folks dozing off during those top-rated CSI and Law & Order franchises wake up to the local news broadcast. That's a lot of folks. (I wonder how those numbers compare to 'appointment' viewings of the evening network news, or cable news shows.)

For a relatively small action, the coverage on Arnold's speech at Santa Monica college was buoying, and trickled up into the national media.

    •  Second that. (4.00)
Was talking about this with some NYC kossacks at our recent meetup. Someone said something about the "silly season" --i said--ok here's the challenge--let's see if we can get some real coverage into the mediastream this summer, past all that silliness. Would love to see what we can do --make it a summer of reckoning.

The best daily-paper reporting on Whitewater was done not by the WP or the NYT, but by the Minneapolis StarTribune and their reporter Tom Hamburger, who now has a nice and well-deserved gig at the WSJ.

The Strib was able to do the best Whitewater reportage precisely because they didn't have politicals like Jeff (Sheffield Nelson's best bud) Gerth polluting their staff.

Go local and go to DC.  4th of July would be great.

If they won't even let in a member of the government, how can this possibly be a democracy? Why do they hate Americans?

You can also become part of a coordinated attempt to make our viewpoint heard in the media. Sign up to be part of the Rapid Response Network.

And maybe we need to force ourselves to call right-wing radio shows in large numbers. Or stage visible demonstrations outside newspaper offices and TV studios.

I wish I could think of something else. I've been to lots of demonstrations in the last few years, and it's so discouraging to participate in some huge, hopeful event--only to go home and watch how the media coverage sucks.

I attended the inauguration protests in January 2001--which were MASSIVE--and I should have known the fix was in when I saw how the media ignored us or wrote us off as "sore losers."
