  •  McConnell is no friend of the repub base in KY (5+ / 0-)

In my view McConnell's primary could be trouble for him. Since Rand Paul primaried Mitch's guy 2 years ago McConnell has been seen to vulnerable to a credible tea party candidate. This more about what McConnell isn't than what he is. In short, McConnell is not:
    a racist
    an evangelical
    rabidly anti-abortion
    a gun nut
    rabidly anti-immigrant
    rabidly homophobic

The republican base in KY is.

The monied powerbrokers will come after any opponent to McConnell as McConnell is a rich person or corporations best friend. Rand Paul's was able to turn these forces back without alienating them, but that was for an open seat that was going republican either way. These stakes are much higher and I do not know if this Biven guy will be able to withstand the heat and money coming out of the backrooms and boardrooms. If he does and if he campaigns straight to the issues that matter to the base he will have a very good shot. Mitch can and will sling mud, but he won't be credible if he tries to compete as "one of" the real base. McConnell is no good ol boy.

    •  This might strengthen McConnell in the general. (0+ / 0-)

McConnell will be given every opportunity in a GOP primary to show that he's not:

      a racist
      an evangelical
      rabidly anti-abortion
      a gun nut
      rabidly anti-immigrant
      rabidly homophobic
It depends how McConnell and Bevin run their primary.  If it becomes a race to the right, then it will be quite nasty.  Both the Tea Party and McConnell are quite skilled at making each other look horrible.  They may even construct memes and nasty sound bites that can be turned against whoever wins, in the manner that Gingrich's term "vulture capitalist" was turned against Romney.
