A novel use of copyright law.  Hmm. If they are successful, I'm sure that there are a lot of people who'd like to make that same novel use of copyright law.

That whole episode was such a good example of how the tv media today are just stenographers who do not think.  They're much more concerned about whether they're wearing the right kind of sleeveless dress and hipster eyeglasses than about the actual content of what they are reporting.

      •  That's a gorgeous data visualization (4+ / 0-)

and I took a look at the source and it looks like they did it entirely with html and CSS.  I've got some books here for html5 and CSS3.  Looks like, with an up to date browser, you can do some amazing things with the latest CSS.  I'd love to specialize in that some day (data visualization). It would be a good use of the engineering and IT background, and creative abilities.  As far as I know, there is not much of a market for it for paying jobs.  Too many people do it for free.  I wonder if all of that will work itself out at some point where creative folk find ways to get paid for their work in an easier way.  We badly need a simpler, easier way to compensate people for using their photos, graphics, etc.  If there was an easy way to find material, know how to attribute it properly and pay some small royalty or something, I think a lot of people would be able to get some $ for their work.  As it stands now the laws are horrific and there is no well known clearinghouse for finding and using material.  There are, of course, a number of different brokers out there like AP images, other stock photo sites, but they're all either a pain to use or too expensive.

copyright laws for a while now, to silence its critics and even to sue them. A despicable practice but apparently legal, or at least semi-legal.
