  •  When we were little, I asked my dad why the (6+ / 0-)

catholic families had so many kids in them and, so he didn't have to explain the rhythm method to a pre-pubescent daughter, he told me that the pope wanted catholics to make as many more catholics as they could, so the churches would stay full.

Seemed to make a lot of sense at the time.

When I learned about the rhythm method,  I successfully used it (in in combo with other methods) during the glorious moment in time between the invention of the pill and the discovery of aids.

As a teacher, I slipped it into biology lessons whenever possible.  I thought teens could use a back-up plan, and knowing that you have a high or low chance of parenting is powerful knowledge, makes pregnancy something that you can control, not just some kind of magic.

The official catholic approach to family planning takes a lot of work to pull off, and just isn't that accurate.

That said, true practicing catholics still seem to have a lot of kids, and I don't think the church wants that to stop.

If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. &
