Refusal to answer any question on a census form is punishable by a fine of up to $100. I have never heard of this fine actually being imposed -- which, given libertarians' great umbrage at the census and American Community Survey, makes me doubt that it happens. But filling out the form isn't a matter of unfettered choice.

to your name, dob and residency status and 2 other stats I can't pull off the top of my head right now.  Also that you could refuse to take the census.

However, in researching the answer to make sure, I went to the Census website and found I was in error.  I can understand requiring certain information to make for a proper tabulation of the population but agree that some of the questions, while still useful information, should not be necessary.

A person's character is measured by how they treat everyone. Not just your pet group.

As someone who actually uses those data sometimes (aggregated, of course!), I want them to be as complete as possible. I think the government has a legitimate interest in collecting them, and that provides some warrant for mandates and threatened fines. Philosophically, I'd be just as happy to pay people to complete the forms, although that probably wouldn't work as well. I certainly wouldn't want non-compliance to be criminalized. And the security of census data is an absolutely legit topic -- as well as the subject of libertarian fever dreams.
