Bryan Sykes' work on DNA reveals some differences between male and female.  Female DNA as described in "The Seven Daughters of Eve" tended to be more stable in terms of community and can be traced back roughly 10,000 years.  In "Adam's Curse" male DNA fits to a tribal pattern making the trace more difficult as tribes moved around.  The example of Genghis Khan is used.  Beautiful women were sent to him before the murder of the rest of the population.  His genes were reproduced millions of times making the point that in the male tribal societies females were used to spread the genes of the most powerful males.  This pattern added to the clear persecution of women by the Roman Catholic church and later witch-burning shows an ugly pattern of suppression of females.  I feel a similar concern in the red states of the US today.
