  •  A huge mistake in her reasoning (14+ / 0-)

That is an amazing article, and personal experience has me nodding in agreement with almost everything she says. BUT...

She keeps talking about training. Well, "training" - learning how to handle and use the firearm - might alleviate a bit of that pernicious paranoia and anxiety, but only because a person might come to feel more confident in his or her ability to use the gun.

This confidence brings a whole new level of neurosis to the equation - take her example of the guy in the garage. If she were confident with her gun, she probably would have drawn on him...then forever after told the world how her gun saved her from being raped.

Aside from that, "training" isn't intense in most cases and won't create nearly the same level of competence as the trainer tells you (while he's taking your money). It's akin to martial arts classes, where people get their belts and think they can then go out and wipe out people Jet Li-style in a bar fight.

Yeah, it doesn't work like that.

Anyway, wonderful series, courageous young woman, and opening a discussion that really needs to be had concerning America's fetish with lethal force.
