  •  Russian economy is not doing well: annual growth (7+ / 0-)

    rate is below 2% now and budget deficit is growing. Opposition to Putin is growing and Navalny's conviction only emboldened it. Putin is still reasonably popular but if the economy starts doing worse it may not last long. So scapegoats are in order and gays are always available. Russians have always been rather socially conservative and somewhat anti-gay. Putin is also increasingly turning to Orthodox Church as his attempts to create a secular movement (Nashi, then later People's Front) largely failed. So we have the government and the church working together to create a popular conservative movement. In many ways not unlike Mussolini or Franco.
