  •  Clarification - amendment vs bill (6+ / 0-)

Please don't confuse the two when you call - it makes us look kind of stupid.

Amash/Conyers is an entire independent bill, with bipartisan cosponsorship.

It is in committee and not going anywhere soon

That is different from the imminent upcoming vote, which is on an amendment to the defense appropriations bill.
This Sirota piece at Salon is as good as any at outlining the dynamics going on with that

(it was written before the amendment was ruled "in order" for the upcoming vote)

    •  Is there anything in the diary (3+ / 0-)

that you think should be changed to make this clear?

I mentioned that it's an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill, but did I inadvertently put anything else int there that would confuse people? I can update.

There's lots of conflating going on. I'm not sure how to disentangle it at this point, but the initial position statement is probably where the distinction is most blurred.

The imminent vote is the Amash amendment. What you describe in the position statement is the bill that is in committee and will presumably face various votes in days to come.

Bipartisanship we can believe in -- Democrats should support the Amash/Conyers amendment, and call Congress now.

This amendment is sponsored by a Republican, but it is co-sponsored by a Democrat, John Conyers, and others

From what I can track, there is no Amash/Conyers amendment, nor any cosponsors to the Amash amendment.
Here's a link to the amendment

That is what is up for vote now.

Getting the more comprehensive bill out of committee, and then (if successful) getting it votes in the House, is a different campaign for the future.
