  •  I think there's only about 1000 hours... (4+ / 0-)

...of academic contact for most elementary students in a typical school year (that's time in school minus lunch, recess, PE, etc.)

    This is stunning.

    •  I've added up the time spent in testing each year (3+ / 0-)

across 12 years, and it comes to an entire instructional year.
Think about that.  The kids are getting one less year, now, due to all the standardized testing.

Oh, and the science books in my classroom are now 13 years old, because we can no longer afford books.  We joke that the classroom set we have left have museum peices on the front (the Space Shuttle).

How does their FOOTBALL TEAM do???

I know around here, that's all that counts. Every time you turn around they're laying off another teacher, or cutting a program. But never, ever, do they touch the sports program!

Ten years ago, in a highly questionable election that never got a second glance, they crammed a new building levy down our throats that had been voted down six times in a row. Then BAM - it mysteriously passed by a handful of votes.

Among the things built was a sports complex that dwarfs the actual school. They have a football field and PA system worthy of an expansion team, classy snack bar, a Olympic sized track, THREE baseball diamonds, and a two gyms Then they turned right around and said "we don't have enough money to operate! How about another 6 mil levy?"

The kids graduating from this place can't read, can't write a coherent sentence, can't make simple change. But by god their football team does great.
