And no one has mentioned that the production values were MEGA-CHEAP!

Seriously, the acting and the script are so great you can ignore the super low budget everything!

And yes, the diarist's title phrase has popped into my head many times over the last few years in exactly the context intended.

    Strange days, indeed....

    •  Loved I Claudius! (5+ / 0-)

When I was living in the New York area in the 1990s, the local PBS stations used to rerun I Claudius for every begathon, and every time I'd watch it again. I saw the diarist's title and I had to check out the diary. That line by Claudius became a family catchphrase. We used to go around spouting that line, with pale imitations of Derek Jacobi's inimitable delivery. And you don't want to hear my Sian Allen: "I want to be a goddess, Claudius." :) And remember Patrick Stewart (with "hair") as Sejanus?

This brings back fond memories of Sunday nights in the late '70s spent in front of the TV watching Sixty Minutes, then settling in for a night of PBS programming: I Claudius and Carl Sagan's Cosmos and topping it off with reruns of Upstairs, Downstairs, and later the excellent Connections series with James Burke. I was newly married, and we'd go to my parents' for Sunday dinner every week, then my mother and brother and sometimes my father would come to my apartment (we had cable and they didn't at that point) and we'd sit around the TV with coffee and ice cream and pizza or leftovers from dinner and watch TV well into the night. It was our family "appointment TV."

the same Sunday night line-up. After 3 years of high school Latin classes, it was fun to see ancient Rome come to life.

I understand that "Cosmos" is being redone, with no doubt better graphics and animations. The biology and astronomy information certainly need updating after almost 40 years.

I am seeing more anti Semitism. The 9/11 troofers have been making more noise in recent months. This  demonization of progressives is getting out of hand. Sorry to say, I am really disturbed by the anti-intellectual hordes taking control of the nation.

In 2008, my daughter was at a party where she overheard a conversation with a local police officer. He said he made it a point to stop cars with Obama bumper stickers and hassle the drivers. "To serve and protect" my arse.
