    Sometime when I'm not reading as an escape I'll give it a go.

    As a teen I loved Fielding (Tom Jones), but it does require work, and the appropriate head space. FWIW I can always enter the Austen headspace but the others are harder.

      Maybe the language is closer to ours than the 18th century novels - even though she didn't write that long after.

      Good luck with Tristram!  It's very po-mo, and self-conscious about being a book (which is why, instead of writing, he'll just put in a swirly picture- like, why not?)  

      I think Tom Jones should be next on my list (I'm writing about lesser-known Joseph Andrews); saw the film, but never read the book!
