  •  well, there is some hope (6+ / 0-)

that they will evolve and be more humane than humans.  I watched iRobot.

Robots themselves are fairly neutral types of technology,  we can use them both for good and evil. The use being a choice of the humans, evil will have a signficant head start.

    •  It certainly worked out that way (5+ / 0-)

      for nuclear power.

And so long as we the people take it lying down, we'll have no say in the matter. Perhaps some people prefer the perception of not having any responsibility.

      •  nuclear power (2+ / 0-)

would not be what I consider a 'fairly neutral technology' in that the issues of waste and contamination, whether in a benevolent, ie, non-weaponized, use or a hostile use have never been adequately addressed or resolved.

Robots don't have to be used for evil,  they aren't inherently dangerous to human life in the way nuclear based technologies are.

As for opposing development of robots, we missed that train in general, lots of uses for robots and lots of robots in use.  We can oppose DARPA's project since it is a part of the military, but someone is going to be building a human looking robot eventually.  The reality from the science to date is that non-human looking ones are more stable and successful in real world applications.

But quite frankly, there are many jobs where robots could do good and save lives.

It isn't that people prefer the perceptation of not having responsibility,  but that in many ways a reality, that for a long time now, our government has slipped from popular control, and this robot is probably not going to cause a massive public 'sit-in' which is what we need to dent the current bubble around government.

There is only so much outrage people can muster,  if NSA spying isn't going to do it, if drones aren't doing it, a robot isn't going to do it.

    •  And humans defeated the Borg!! Break out scripts! (1+ / 0-)

After all, if my prediction of reality is formed by fiction, clearly we should be building Lt. Data right now, and submitting to a strikingly non democratic Federation.

Posted because as a white male with health insurance, I've got no more pressing matter than discussing a middling sci if show plot.
