  •  question on the HR (9+ / 0-)

isn't that an abuse to HR the tip jar in this case?

    •  I negate it. (8+ / 0-)

This is a very good observation.
Unilateral action from Obama without Congressional debate would be legitimate grounds for censure if not Impeachment. And as the diarist points out, would put the Democratic members in a bind.
I hope Obama does go to Congress for approval and gets the same response that Cameron got: "NO!"
This is a problem from H3ll. There is only one possible good solution and it's not very likely: That the evidence of CW use by the Assad regime is plain and Russia is moved to chastise and/or punish Syria.
      Leave US out of it.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

      •  I did likewise (8+ / 0-)

The opinion posited by the diarist is a legitimate one.

      •  actually war powers gives lots of room........ (7+ / 0-)
President to notify Congress within 48 hours of launching military action, and bars U.S. armed forces from fighting for more than 60 days, with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without congressional approval

Major political figures have recently spoken about this possibility. I am indeed endorsing this topic of discussion as perfectly valid, although not necessarily the OP's conclusion.

that the Rethugs won't engage in the serious debate this deserves. For them it will be all about hating Obama; they will oppose it simply because they hate Obama. And that's not a basis for a serious debate.

        •  That may be true, but (1+ / 0-)

the end of that game is Obama is not authorized to get US into another misbegotten war. And it would yield an interesting bi-partisan coalition. Barbara Lee and over 100 Democrats would probably be on the no-war side of this too, not because they hate Obama but because it's a bad idea.  It would put the TeaBaggers in a weird place to be aligned with the Progressive Caucus.
Sometimes, you can use the proclivities of the enemy for your own gain.

      •  no it woudn't (0+ / 0-)

Under the war powers at he can bomb and has 90 days to consult with congress. I also think any republican in a district less than beet red  would stay clear of impeachment before 2014.

Well, maybe. But regardless of which way individual Repugnikans vote on it, I see it as lose/lose for them.

If they vote for intervention, they're voting in support of the Secret Muslim Kenyan Usurper.

If they vote against intervention, they are putting their hatred of the Secret Muslim Kenyan Usurper ahead of the best interests of the defense industry. And, of course, against Keeping America Strong Abroad.

      •  It most certainly would not be (0+ / 0-)

legitimate grounds for censure or impeachment.

Not only is it allowed by the War Powers Act, IIRC, presidents at least as far back as Truman have done this kind of thing, and none have been impeached for it.

Additionally, the Constitution specifically says the president is to be impeached only for "high crimes or misdemeanors."  While it's never been firmly established what, exactly, constitutes a high crime or misdemeanor in this context, since unilateral action on Obama's part would be allowed by the War Powers Act, it's legal, and can't be considered ANY kind of crime or misdemeanor.

      Obamistan USA.

Support and loyalty to the President does NOT suspend reality, no matter how hard you hit the "hide" button.

The idiots are ready to start impeachment without ANY reason, so clearly giving them any thing to sink their teeth in will only make it more likely.

Repugs under stand, it is NOT that you actually Impeach, it is the smear in the history book of Impeachment that achieves their goal.

      Ronnie Raygun = God
      B-lack Obama = Satan

It's a simple playbook, so knock off the hit rating.
