and I'll back whatever play Sen. Davis decides upon.

    She's earned her shot.

If she were to ask me (and she has not) I would suggest she run for Attorney General because it actually requires more policy chops than the weak Governor in Texas.

The most powerful pols in Texas, legitimately, are:

    1. Lt. Governor, who presides in the Senate and needs to have a legislative agenda.

    2.  Speaker of the House, who presides in the House and also needs to have a legislative agenda.

    3.  Comptroller of Public Accounts, who attaches a "fiscal note" to every piece of legislation that contains judgment calls that effectively mean life or death for the bill.

    4.  Governor, who typically has no legislative agenda, whose primary power is that of appointment, and lacks even a pocket veto.

Now, Gov. Perry has leveraged more power into the Governor's office than any occupant in my lifetime by getting the legislature to set aside slush funds he can dispense as political favors.  I write in the hope Perry has not started a tradition of buying influence with public money.

The AG position is a dandy place for a smart activist who cares about the public interest.  And it's much easier to win,

That said, she's earned whatever shot she wants to take.
