Medieval peasants ate pretty much nothing but bread and beer, but since they did manual labor from dawn to dusk, they were five foot nothing and stick thin. Meanwhile, aristocrats sat inside all day and were fat despite being taller.

The fruits of success, make you slovenly.

One reason I don't ever plan or want to be so rich I don't have to work.  I don't see that as "living."

Historically, ruling classes were descended from barbarian conquerors, whose cultures held that work was for women and slaves and only hunting and warfare - seizing by force the objects of one's desire - were worthy of "real men", where the only mastery worth a damn was the mastery of other people, and the right of the powerful to have and do whatever they wanted was secure.

making the world better. There is an infinite variety of causes for the idle rich, as long as they have not lost their souls.

"outdoor" conditions, 24/7. That takes a lot more fuel to deal with, than living indoors where the extremes of weather are buffered.

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...
