in NC.  The State Capitol Police are under the Dept of Public Safety -- a state agency that also contains the State Highway Patrol and (I think) the SBI.  The SCP has jurisdiction over the capitol and the state house (where most of the action is) but there aren't enough of them to arrest everybody, so they also get support from the Raleigh PD and maybe the Wake Co Sheriff's Dept. (I think they drive the buses that cart the protesters off to jail.)

Word I get from a friend who's more actively involved in Moral Monday than I am is that the SCP Chief would really rather NOT arrest the protesters.  I'm not sure of his motivation for that; could be he sympathizes (because being a state employee, the protesters are actually defending HIS interests as well) or it could be that he feels like arresting people just draws more attention to the movement (he's right) which is what they WANT (he's right again) and therefore counterproductive for the ruling class (a trifecta of right).  As for the individual officers, I feel like their attitudes are probably varied.  Some of them no doubt relish the job, some of them probably feel like it's a "shit detail" and some of them probably hate the idea of cuffing people who are peacefully voicing their dissent.

It will get worse before it gets better, I fear.  But just because a thing is hard, doesn't mean we shouldn't do it.

I'll believe corporations are people when one comes home from Afghanistan in a body bag.
