  •  If India's fishing industry is 3rd biggest (13+ / 0-)

in the world , the dolphin bycatch can't be zero ,

In 2008, India had the world's third largest fishing industry.

An estimated 300,000 cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) also die as bycatch each year, because they are unable to escape when caught in nets.

    Indo-Pacific humpback and bottlenose dolphins

Drift and bottom-set gillnets are the biggest conservation threat to these dolphins in the Indian Ocean. There have only been assessments in some areas, such as Zanzibar. Hunting, until 1996, reduced the population and contributed to its decline. Now hunting has been replaced with eco-tourism. It was estimated in 2001 that there are 161 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus)] and 71 Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin (Sousa chinensis) that are left based on photo-identification mark-recapture techniques.[8] A study on bycatch revealed over 160 incidences of bycatch since 2000. Approximately 30% of bycatch is in drift and bottom-set gillnets.[8] Mortality is about 8% and 5.6% for bottlenose and humpback dolphins respectively .[8] The mitigation of bycatch is imperative for these species and eco-tourism.

If they want to do something , they could do better to keep a few in tanks doing shows and reduce / stop killing them in the wild .

I'm hopeful that it would lead to the expansion of their rights, but this is a big step forward for any country. Conservationists in India are thrilled.

"I hope this will put some energy into India's Action Plan for the Gangetic Dolphin, which is supposed to run until 2020," said Belinda Wright from the Wildlife Protection Society of India. "But there's been very little action.

She said the ban was a good first stop, but warned against excessive optimism. "I'm very proud that India has done this," she said. "I'm not trying to be cynical but I have been a conservationist in India for four decades. One gets thrilled with the wording, but I don't think it's going to turn to the tables."

"But dolphins for now are safe from dolphinariums, and that's a good thing," she added.

        •  A glass half empty kind of guy, hey? Don't (6+ / 0-)

let one good piece of news reduce the depression over the bad.

It's one step in the right direction.  I'll be the first to say that we're never going to eliminate the horrendous treatment of any animals - including the human animal.  But to have a major country officially extend the status of nonhuman personhood on any creature is a HUGE modification of the mindset.  We have no idea whether this will cause further improvements - but it's certainly not going to make it worse, so why grouse about it?

It's pretty irrelevant if one is "better than" the other, when one in no way precludes the other.

The US, of course, hasn't done either.

Who are you quoting ? Putting quote marks around something that was not said , is just a silly little game .

I really don't care if you do or don't get it .

If you take an animal and make it into a star , put on shows with it , the public is much more likely to oppose the killing of that type of animal . So once again I'll tell you

If they want to do something , they could do better to keep a few in tanks doing shows and reduce / stop killing them in the wild .
