debate we may may be waiting for a long time. Not only that, they may "shape" the debate by choosing who is included; some views may be left out.

I'm not as skeptical about President Obama as some are, but it seems inappropriate for him to lead this. He should support it, but any involvement would feel too much as if he were trying to guide it to particular outcomes.

I have misgivings about elected officials taking the helm for the same reason, to say nothing of the possibility that inflated egos may interfere with the process.

Heads of corporations and religious leaders being "in charge" would result in other conflicts of interest.

The reality is that we, as a country, no longer have many people who are widely respected across lines of class, ethnicity, age, or other potential dividers. Even our political parties are fractured.

Perhaps our best hope is some spontaneous event, like the "Occupy" activities? We the People, speaking up for ourselves, demanding to be heard. Occupy channeled the hopes of many, but concerns about the growing security state are even more widespread.

It matters not how small the beginning may seem to be: what is once well done is done forever. Henry David Thoreau, in Civil Disobedience
