You're favorably comparing Putin's Russia - a place where journalists wind up murdered, dissidents flee the country (and still wind up murdered) or get disappeared, that's conducting dirty wars all over the Caucasus, imprisons female punk rockers for free speech, persecutes gays (and is currently the subject of earnest boycott discussions at the IOC over its LGBT human rights record)

    with

    the United States?

    That's pathetic.

    Fuck me, it's a leprechaun.

what happens in Russia...I think we are all pretty aware of their own treatment of dissidents, but what supposedly doesn't happen here. I didn't see the diarist make a direct comparison as you suggest.

In addition, what does it say about our beloved country When it was necessary for a whistleblower to flee the clutches of his own government? We know damned well, and Ellsburg agreed, he would have been treated rather shabbily here because of the chilling effect on whistleblowers and journalists alike and because of this President and his enforcers like Holder..

    •  I'm making no such comparison. (0+ / 0-)

What's pathetic is that the Attorney General is reduced to lying to a government which regularly violates human rights in order for them to consider handing over an American citizen so he can be abused by this government.

Torture is unlawful in the United States.
      Since when?

Some of us can still read. Maybe not you, but some of us.

So tell me, what do you like best about Vladimir Putin? His dreamy eyes? Steely body?

        I'm all ears, babe.

          •  Cool. (0+ / 0-)

Homosexual propaganda is illegal in that country. You could go to jail for that comment. Terrible really, when we're talking about freedom of speech and stuff, right?

...so I don't think he'll have to worry about being persecuted or prosecuted in Russia for homosexual propaganda, babe.

Bradley Manning, on the other hand, might not find his jail time very much fun.

I know, I know, apples and kumquats...it's just that I can't remember the last time I had any say in what takes place in Russia.

              •  You're assuming (0+ / 0-)

that the Russian government adheres to American standards of evidence. Or human rights in general.

I'd consider that a very debatable assertion in light of known facts, but let's just leave it at that.

where's my habeas corpus? Standards of evidence my ass. It's secret evidence that will aid and abet our endless enemies. Secret crimes, secret legislation,  secrete courts, secret warrants and no due process under the new super dupper secret Patriot Act,NDAA and FISA.  If the spooks the DoJ and the presidents decide your a enabler aider and abetter a spy? (to who) an enemy of the state or a affiliate or just a plain old terrist who's gonna kill yer family'.

American standards? lol. The American standards our Bill of Rights is gone daddy gone. The Obama adminstration has made the Bushies abuses of power legal. Our congress has passed legislation that under the guise of the bogus endless GWOT makes the law whatever the spooks and Obama decide is necessary to keep us safe. Human Rights? Forget about it, they do not apply as we're at war with an enemy that is everywhere and we don't need to adhere to non stinking human rights.
