  •  How many arenas/stadiums do they need? (3+ / 0-)

Joe Louis Arena isn't that old. Cobo Hall is still there. Ford Field gets used how many times a year? Comerica is brand new practically. The Palace at Auburn Hills was built in the 80s. The Pontiac Silverdome also still exists and is usable.

Does any municipality have that many stadium/arena options? I mean if the New York Rangers and Knicks can share an arena, why the fuck can't the Pistons and Red Wings?

Detroit residents should be fuming and demanding this project be shelved.

Given the Wings' popularity in Detroit, I do think there would be a good argument for replacing it—but only if that replacement were funded with entirely private money.

The one thing I would never want them to do is to move out to the Palace. (Ford Field and Comerica Park couldn't be full-season hockey venues, for obvious reasons.)

While the economic arguments for having a sports team downtown are usually overblown, it's still much better for the local economy than locating the team on a highway interchange out in the suburbs.
