  •  yup, "fly by wire" is already in a lot of cars and (7+ / 0-)

with a fairly simple reflash or the ECU, you could cause any number of horrible things from intentionally blowing the engine to crashing the car by locking the accelerator full on......

This is now folks...just not super common yet.....

...because I've seen computers, the systems attached to them, and the bits that attach them to eachother fail in various cars I drive.  In all of the cases I personally ran into, this just meant the car wouldn't start, or it ran like shit and would stall out at the drop of a hat.  That's OK; it didn't directly endanger my safety or the safety of those around me.  Even if I lost all power catastrophically while travelling at 75 down the highway -- which actually did happen -- I could still safely control the vehicle and bring it to a stop without endangering myself or those around me.

The steering system and the braking system ought to have actual physical linkages, so that the ability to control the car is still within the power of the driver, no matter what.  While this needs to be addressed sensibly (particularly with hybrids which use regenerative braking,) it should still come down to "if you stomp the brake hard enough, the cars brakes will close and stop you, so long as the hydrolics are there."
