  •  Passage of the Amash/Conyers Amendment (14+ / 0-)

would have been the absolutely perfect vehicle to jump start the privacy vs. security debate, if the President were serious about having it.

The amendment was doomed in the Senate and would never have become law, so it doesn't much matter if it was "poorly thought-out", as some here have contended. The ensuing discussion would have been enlightening, and a better amendment might well have emerged from House-Senate negotiations. The fact that the top leaders of both parties opposed this so strongly speaks volumes.

Instead, we'll no doubt have "serious discussions" of the sort Joan outlines, as the leaders scramble to frame a response that will please e̶v̶e̶r̶y̶o̶n̶e̶  no one...

followed by a high-level commission stuffed with security hawks and a few token privacy advocates for faux balance... and a year from now, they'll issue a well-written report advocating a handful of cosmetic "reforms" while the growth of the surveillance state continues essentially unchecked.

    Color me unimpressed.

We can only hope that the alliance-of-convenience between libertarian Republicans and liberal Democrats on this one issue has real legs.

When you triangulate everything, you can't even roll downhill...

and it's more issues than just this one issue, marbles to accrue to the group or person who can forge this into something Scary....rather than just a shell game, as usual...
