we would have very speedy water  transportation around the Bay.  But we don't.  I remember hearing talk of it, but like so many other things, it came to naught.

    It's the Supreme Court, stupid!

    •  They can't be very energy-efficient (0+ / 0-)

      per passenger, anyway.

      •  I'm not sure. (1+ / 0-)

They were in wide use in the English Channel at one time and they have them in the Pacific Northwest, but I don't know much about their energy efficiency.

        •  Not a lot of alternatives on the Channel! (0+ / 0-)

For the Pacific NW, possibly bridges with trains (or even buses?) could outdo ferries? I'll see if I can find out anything.

We're on the early ferry to SF tomorrow morning for some time in SF, just for the heck of it :)

and it is very efficient, although expensive.  And then there are the ferries which are much slower than the Hovercrafts and give me horrific seasickness if the weather is bad.

I hope you enjoy your ferry ride!  Hope it won't be too foggy.

We had a pleasant ferry ride over at 9:15, and a warm ride back (I in a tee shirt!) at 4:10. Incredible. It will give all those tourists totally the wrong impression ;)

Once when we were in London for a few days, we thought of taking the Chunnel train to Paris for lunch and coming back - just as a thing. It would have been tres cool, but we decided that we should spend those few days in London, not on a train. pixxer-son took the ferry once and IIRC had your experience. I will have to ask him.

              •  What a nice day! (1+ / 0-)

It's sad that our lives are so disconnected to the water even though the Bay is right there.  I'd love to be able to take water transportation to SF on a regular basis.  By the way, did you see the story about the puppy who was rescued in the Bay yesterday?  It was in the Chronicle.  He was picked up by a Berkeley engineer who commutes daily to SF in an inflatable boat!  Now, that's taking responsibility for your own transportation!
