the bullet did not "go awry". It went where it was aimed when the trigger was pulled.
Like "accidental gunshot" the term "stray bullet" is a misnomer. You are exactly right. All the shooting victims have one thing in common, they were either in the line of fire (and the muzzle was pointed directly at them), or they were in the cone of fire, (and were hit by a ricochet or a bullet fragment).

If rural gun owners, such as this man, were charged appropriately, chuarges would include reckless endangerment, they would lose their RKBA for a good long time, pay a hefty fine, and they would be be booked and have to spend at least a night in jail before bail could be posted.

The fact that the man was surprised, means that he was putting those kids at risk every time he was practicing. He just never got caught before.

I can' rec, because your last paragraph is ridiculous and totally wrong. I also don't believe you would do that.

I should have clarified that I would have wanted to do that, but of course I know better.

Trouble is, given that same set of real facts and hypotheticals, too many people would just do it anyway.

using firearms in ways that they likely never intended to use them.

Like this 32 yr old guy in Brooklyn, Thomas Dunikowski, who thought he was using his illegal AR15 for self defense, when he expressed the rage of his neighborhood, and shot at some drunk, angry teens in the street...

Now he's facing attempted murder and other charges. The first trial ended in a hung jury, last month, and the second trial is going through pre-trial hearings.

When contemplating using a firearm for self defense, no one expects that it is they, who will ruin their own life, and ruin the lives of their own wife and children, because of a rashly deployed firearm.

Curious readers can find links in my recent comments, or google Brooklyn AR15 shooting trial Thomas Dunikowski.
