  •  Thanks for the prediction, "psychic". (0+ / 0-)
    •  It is not about being psychic. (5+ / 0-)

It is about seeing all of the pieces in motion and deducing the outcome.  Democrats are on defense, not offense as usual, letting Republicans set the agenda.  Obama is not rallying the base to do anything big while the Republicans have been running roughshod all over abortion and now "election reform" firing up their base.  Congressional approval is at all-time lows and Obama's own numbers are dropping. Obama needs to activate the Obama voters, the young and those who generally sit out elections and he is not doing that.  Congressional Democrats need to step up and fight for something and they are not doing that. That means Republicans are favored to win.  It is really simple, and pretending the problem doesn't exist is no way to solve it.

The Democrats best shot is to run green, propose big new environmental regulation and big new job creation programs, preferably tied together.  They need to be the party of the future while Republicans re-fight the past.  So far, I don't see that happening.

    •  It's quite telling that over the last 20 years (4+ / 0-)

it hasn't mattered which party had "institutional control" of Congress.  Whether they've had a numerical majority or not, Republicans have had absolute control of the nation's political agenda and "discourse" (if one could actually call it that).

It's also quite telling that for well over 30 years now, no matter which party "controls" Congress, the entire "Overton Window" has continued to move, farther and farther to the right.

And the Democratic base is supposed to respond to this, how exactly?

Shirley Chisholm was right. Our Republic is in deep trouble.
