    ...that anyone seriously wants to eat food produced under a producer-inspects regime. Yeah, we've all heard the argument that if Acme Food Co. ships tainted meat, the market will punish it by reducing its customer base. But that ignores the human cost of allowing customers to risk serious illness; it also ignores the fact that the Gilded Age regulatory style (none) doesn't work to ensure the safety of consumers. Rat poison in sausages, for example. Don't even get me started on patent medicines.

    I know a fellow who works for a pharmaceutical manufacturer, who believes we'd be better off without any regulatory bodies on safety and quality of our food and drugs. I've never asked him if he has read about the market history that led to the FDA and USDA being established.
