  •  I think the point is.... (4+ / 0-)

that way of thinking is as destructive as white against black racism.  It is self inflicted racism.  "I want to be stupid because it makes me cool" is just plain stupid.  By you saying "not all black kids think alike" and using that for a defense of self inflicted racism is as wrong as honestly believing that all whites are racists.

Except maybe the Asians, they're supposed to be smart, right?

Seriously, though. Anti-intellectualism crosses a lot of racial and gender lines. It's pretty ubiquitous in American culture, especially the value of 'jocks' and the glorification of sports up through high school and beyond.

"I had Black students tell me to my face that getting good grades and being smart was "being White" and they couldn't have that." ....By you saying "not all black kids think alike" and using that for a defense of self inflicted racism is as wrong as honestly believing that all whites are racists.

I'm simply saying ("I had Black students tell me") a stupid comment is NOT indicative nor does it reflect the views of an entire community. Maybe the author should rephrase the comment.

That's succombing to peer pressure in order to gain acceptance.

      The feeling of being wanted.

      The feeling of being included.

It is just one way of reinforcing the 'dumbed down' movement.

      •  I contend that thinking that blacks... (0+ / 0-)

are and should be stupid, is racism.  The fact that a black person is the one thinking it does not change the outcome.
