    1. The judge didn't and couldn't "order" GZ to testify.
    2. "Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever built". If the adversary system is the least worst available, using it is a monumental achievement.
    3. The skills needed to survive a cross-examination have zero overlap with guilt or innocence. Imagine an innocent person hauled into court due to mistaken identity. Imagine that he is no more intelligent or articulate than GZ. He will be turned into a pretzel and look like a fool if the prosecutor is even competent.
