  •  You're not alone. The bear still shows up. (12+ / 0-)

We took the feeders down almost 10 years ago. It's apparent that bears show their young where to tour for feeders. We surprised a cub who had perched himself on the empty wrought iron feeder post in the back yard a couple of years ago.

We just didn't know that bears would be a problem when we first moved to New England. Our feeders attracted many, many beautiful birds. Even some Evening,  Pine, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Red Crossbills, Scarlet Tanagers, and even one incredibly brilliant Ingigo Bunting. We counted 14 male American Goldfinches on one feeder one evening. A zillion Chickadees flitting back and forth all the time, of course. Fortunately, this area isn't infested with Brown-headed Cowbirds so the songbird population hasn't been affected much.

We still listen to the wonderful song of several nests of Hermit Thrushes off in the woods. We were visited by a Barred Owl near our screen-in porch this morning. Right now, there's a murder of crows annoying the squirrels and all the other birds in the area. And a Pileated Woodpecker just let out his loud territorial call.

Then there's the occasional visit by our curious flower-eating deer.

    •  What a pretty doe! (8+ / 0-)

Too bad they will eat ANYTHING! This year they "pruned" my potato plants. What can eat potatoes? So bitter. Ugh.

I agree with you about bears teaching their young where to find the good stuff. Oh, well, they were here first.

Sounds like you have a healthy bird population. Lovely. There are no cowbirds here, either. If I ever see one, I shall be a ruthless hunter. They destroy songbird populations.

      •  Mmmmm. Potatoes. Ahhhhhh. (5+ / 0-)

This doe is one of the healthiest-looking ones I've seen in a few years. It must be all those delicious flowers. She ate the neighbors' flowers, mostly. We've pretty much given in to the critters.

        •  Flowers have vitamins! (3+ / 0-)

I haven't quite given up. There is a very tall fence around the vegetable garden and I try to plant deer resistant varieties of everything else. But there is no such thing as deer "proof!"

Container growing, with most pots hanging from the eaves, also works well. As does planting much more than I can use. And I have left most of the property as Nature intended.

Since I want to live in the woods, and love having all the different animals (and BUGS) around, it's a que sera, sera situation.
