The print version title is "Let’s mess with Texas" and I thoroughly approve.

From the moment the Supreme Court threw out Section 4 of the act, which subjected the voting laws in states and jurisdictions with a history of discrimination to Justice Department scrutiny, conservative legislators in those places gleefully signaled their intention to pass laws to make it harder to vote. In addition, Texas reimposed a redistricting map that a federal court had already ruled was discriminatory.
It won’t shock you to learn that after Holder made his announcement, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas condemned the Obama administration for showing an “utter contempt for our country’s system of checks and balances.”

Actually, what Holder’s move shows is an utter contempt for efforts to deprive our fellow Americans of their right to cast a meaningful ballot. It is a contempt that all of us should feel.

If that demographic change that should turn Texas blue doesn't get its ass in gear right now for the state elections this time that "change" may be put into a lock box for decades. Dionne mentions the strategy used by "segregationist Southern Democrats" to keep the vote in nearly exclusive white hands for almost a century after the Civil War.

It worked. Counties with tiny white minorities were lily white in government positions other than janitor and laborer because the majority had no hope of actually casting a vote. It took a huge, long and slow national movement, augmented occasionally by the U.S. Army to bring change to that. We really don't need to go through that shit again.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
