  •  I am just reflecting on how much (10+ / 0-)

we weren't supposed to know, that is now public. Waterboarding. "Black" prisons. Blanket surveillance of all communications. The Executive Branch has clearly believed it could get away with all kinds of unsavory actions if they were done out of public view. But that strategy has backfired. It's harder and harder to hide things these days.

However, the maddening thing is, now that all these seamy operations of government have come to light, very little change has occurred. I think both Bush and Obama have decided to just brazen it out, trot out justifications, deny what they can still deny, and keep on business as usual. (I'm not hating on Obama generally, but I think he's wrong on the surveillance issue).

Congress can act as a brake on this and I hope they will act.

    •  We've allowed this to happen imo (7+ / 0-)

because we only have two parties and they have engaged in an elaborate kabuki that is just now becoming so frayed at the edges they can no longer keep it together. The gop is falling apart and the dems can no longer claim the gop is the culprit to its base. True the gop is still stone walling but you notice that they can all get together on things like the sequester and repealing insider trading bans for congress critters.

And none of what they do together benefits us. And the so called "grand bargain" Obama was trotting out was only left on the shelf because the tbaggers were so intransigent.

One cannot seriously debate an issue when one side controls access to the facts and is economical with the truth, while at the same time introducing blatant falsehoods into the discussion. - Joe Shikspack

about the NSA. That wasn't supposed to happen. We weren't ever supposed to know, and there weren't going to be any investigations, or debates, or votes, or op-eds about it. But the truth was already leaking out and then Snowden put more pieces of it out and it got put on the front pages. So that is progress but we will see if the next step happens.
