  •  My actual serious observation (7+ / 0-)

It is possible to give reasonable-sounding, non-hateful-sounding versions of most Republican positions.  It doesn't take a magician to present anti-choice, anti-immigration, anti-taxing/spending (etc.) positions in a more or less benign way.  Republicans choose not to do this, because they've run the numbers and they've determined (correctly,  I assume) that a benign appeal, even with no change in their substantive positions, would lose more voters than it would gain.  The core Republican voter supports the party not in spite of the meanness of its appeal, but because of it.  Calls for a kinder, gentler Republican appeal miss the mark because so many Republican voters are as invested in meanness of spirit as they are in bad policies.

    •  This is a direct result of the marriage between (0+ / 0-)

the GOP and religious right. In order to motivate their Christian fundamentalist base, they have to continually frame every political argument as a war between good and evil. There is no room for calm discussion in war. They want sabre rattling and heads on pikes. So the GOP gives it to them.
