  •  Sadly, he line of workers leaving will be smaller (0+ / 0-)

than the line of workers lined up to take their jobs.

Flipping burgers is a job for HS kids, retired seniors and people who need stop gap jobs.  No one who wants to make a real living depends on a career where you wear a paper hat.

The real problem is that there are not enough jobs for people who aspire to more.

    •  Increasingly, (17+ / 0-)

it isn't high school kids working back there. Maybe 20 years ago flipping burgers was for kids and the retired, but the adults have moved in pretty quickly for lack of anything better.

And the chains would rather hire poor adults because chances are they need the job a lot more than the retired and will stick around more than the young.

Remember, the only reason those places hired kids before was that all the adults had real jobs. That's not the case anymore.

      •  My point exactly, bbb. My point exactly. (0+ / 0-)

The solution is not to artificially raise the cost of burgers and cut down on the number of poor souls with spatulas.   No.  It's to educate people sufficiently so that they can get real jobs.

I'd find dealing attractive, too, if that was the best I could do.

We already have a lots of people with college degrees either unemployed or working at what I'd guess you'd called "fake jobs" (which I guess are fake in the sense that they don't pay enough to sustain their workers).
There aren't a lot of jobs and many of the jobs there are don't pay enough to live to.  What we need more jobs AND for every job to pay a living wage.  Because otherwise the goverment and everyone else is subsidizing McD's by keeping their employees fed and sheltered.  What we don't need, more educated people without places to work and student debt.  We also don't need to blame workers for wanting to be able to eat on what they make from a job they spend 8 hrs a day at.

I am the typo queen. Sorry in advance.

        •  People with good educations are working (0+ / 0-)

at McDonalds if they're working at all. Lack of education isn't the reason people don't have real jobs. If they had the education there wouldn't be any jobs for them to get. Ask a college graduate these days.

Furthermore, we can't all be white collar post graduate workers. Somebody has to do the shit work. The point of this strike is that the shit work should at least allow a person to feed, house, and clothe themselves.

          •  That's why it's called "shit work". (0+ / 0-)

The unskilled nature of the work does not warrant higher wages.   It's that old "invisible hand", baby.   Those types of jobs will never warrant a living wage, and it makes no sense to create an artificial value for that work when the market says it can be done for minimum wage.

To artificially jack up the minimum wage is to just transfer the "dole" to private companies.  Subsidize housing, provide SNAP, but don't expect to solve the world's ills by compelling the overpaying of burger flippers.    That's not how it has ever worked.

            •  Why not pay people nothing? (0+ / 0-)

Why not just make the government pay all their expenses and in return make them work for private busines for nothing? Invisible hand!

The hand isn't invisible. The market is not a diety. These are very clear and unmistakable hands of the actions of powerful men.

Sorry, but we just have a fundamental disagreement on the nature of work and its value. As far as I'm concerned, if you work, you shouldn't starve, be homeless, or have sicknesses go untreated. I don't care how low you are. I don't want to live in a medieval feudal society of kings, nobles and peasants.

When I say shit work, I don't mean that these people are shit and therefore they deserve to get screwed. I mean that the jobs offer no opportunity for advancement, prestige, or the accumulation of great wealth. But my God...a person should be able to earn enough even in a shit job to take care of the basic necessities of life.

Currently, these shit jobs require a massive subsidy from the taxpayers in the form of various kinds of assistance. That's the only things that keep these jobs barely tolerable in a humane society. You seem to like this kind of thing. I, for one, think that if you employ a person you should pay them enough money to be able to sustain themselves at minimum. But I also realize there are people like you...which is why we have a minimum wage.

              •  Those jobs are not meant to be careers. (0+ / 0-)

The nature of the work does not warrant more than minimum wage.  That's just reality.

"You seem to like this kind of thing" and "people like me", eh?   I expected better from you.

It's not the jobs that require the subsidy.  We do have a fundamental disagreement on the nature of work.  Let's leave it at that.

                •  Who said anything about a career? (0+ / 0-)

What I said was that a job shouldn't starve you or make you dependent on the government. If you work, you should be able to take care of the basic necessities. That was Henry Ford's philosophy and I share it. The only time anyone should depend on government or charity is if they are out of work or sick. Anyone who works any kind of job, period, should earn enough money to sustain themselves.

It's not the jobs that require the subsidy.
You're splitting hairs. The reason they need the assistance is because the jobs don't pay enough money for them to live and eat.
