    In a traditional reservoir, you'd often inject unsaleable gas for pressure support, but that's not viable in a shale reservoir.

    The oil has gas in solution, so gas is produced if you flow the oil.

    Hence, since it's both a safety hazard and less of a greenhouse gas once burnt, it's flared.

    If you were to use a similar metric (ignoring economics) huge amounts of energy are wasted by the radioactive decay of uranium just sitting around in the earth and not currently installed in nuclear reactors.
