  •  Wage raises would have to be industry wide (4+ / 0-)

McD's knows that people will buy a $3.99 burger at another chain instead of buying the $5.00 angus burger. If wages were raised incrementally over 3 years people would get used to the 23 cent per year increase in the cost of a burger, but it couldn't happen at just one chain or people would notice.

I will use Costco as an example. It may be self-serving for them  to pay their employees well above the industry average, but it is also good for business, How, it might force their competitors, BJ's and Sam's Club, to start raising the wages of their employees as well.

And because of McDonald's position as not just an industry leader but as one of the largest corporations in the country that if they do it, others might follow their lead.

Fast food prices have doubled in the last 10 years or so (WAY ahead of general inflation). Nobody seems to be buying less.
