They don't care.  They want nothing to happen that might reflect positively on this President.  They are all short game.  They have (and continue to) worked hard to rig elections to their favor - gerrymandering, installing voter denial initiatives, etc... This will help them short term and make it easier for them to win elections - until they can't.  The last thing they want is more benefits for the American people.  That's why they are desperately fighting the ACA disinformation and dismantling fight.  And why, when something positive happens they are on it like flies to honey taking credit for things they fought against tooth and nail.

Nothing to do with governance and everything to do with profit and power.

having laid the cornerstones back in the 70s and getting their plans on the launch pad in 1981. This is 40 years in the making, all going according to plan more or less. And we have been pretty much in reaction mode ever since, standing aghast and impotent and too late off the mark.

reaches near the end of it's plan and it has no way to move beyond it then it becomes a short game.  But was it really the long game of the GOP?  Or is it someone's long game, using the GOP as the transport but without a long game for the party itself?  Was the long game plan to harness racists, fundamentalists and to deceive as many as possible and then cut them loose disturbed by the same folks they used who then gained some power - enough to (hopefully) bring the game to an end?

many, many, many have written quite extensively on the GOP game going back 40 years and earlier. Maybe in the current moment we see a little froth in the republican party - some infighting - some seats lost in 2014 - some overextension, but make no mistake about it: this is a long game. For them it is blood sport. They will fall into line like good soldiers, something dems have lots of trouble doing.
