  •  Norway is in the midst of a cultural shift (8+ / 0-)

With the collapse of the Soviet Bloc and the end of the Cold War, lots of Eastern Europeans are moving to Oslo, especially Romanians. (Torfinn's wife is Romanian, and they do a lot of organizing work to help new immigrants get settled.) There is also a significant population of Roma people ("Gypsies"). Also a large number of Swedes enter Norway (I think every waitress I chatted with in Oslo was Swedish).

Most Norwegians accept the newcomers and view them as a welcome addition to the local culture. It's not unusual now to see pierogi stands next to shops offering the usual Norwegian hot dogs wrapped in potato dough. But there is a growing movement of anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner rightwingers (which is what produced the bombing/shooting).

In the end, reality always wins.
