  •  With Music It's Typically Piecing Together Income. (8+ / 0-)

You can perform of course; there are also lessons; and there's wedding and funeral and other similar entertainment.

Last time I lived in a major city I had a theatrical agent who sought me out to book me for my Celtic trad mainly for weddings & funerals, but also parties and special events. She paid me what I got when I was hired through my network, and of course she took a cut.

I once quipped that if I'd been serious about music I'd have chosen something more lucrative like a sax, and she replied that I was getting about on par with those players when they did the same kinds of gigs. I was quite surprised.

A friend of mine does around 10 grand working this way, in a branch of music which in its pure form pays nothing at all.

Start it off as a paying hobby and see what you can get.

    •  I'm thinking how much fun (7+ / 0-)

it would be to have blues guitar at my funeral!  Plenty of possibilities there.

Will add that the best funeral I ever attended ended with a jazz trio (all elderly) playing "Take the A-Train" as the family exited down the center aisle.  Everyone left smiling.

      The truth always matters.

    •  I played in bands back in the EARLY 90s' (6+ / 0-)

won a battle of the bands once... we made about enough money to get the singer's car out of impound after she parked it where she shouldn't have.

Drummers were the issue: either they are just fucked up psychologically, horrid substance abusers OR really good nice dudes who play in 3 bands because of the first 2 problems....

As far as "piecing together an income - bills are every 30 days irrespective, but, on the other hand with all the layoffs I have experienced, I have pieced together an income anyway.

Life in this country has become needlessly difficult.
