  •  I worked in a such a factory building (7+ / 0-)

It had been a shoe manufacturing plant at the turn of the last century - the largest factory in the world in its day.

The leather tanning chemicals (arsenic, and worse), among others, had left the site a barren wasteland with a massive structure in the middle of it. Now it's hundreds of offices surrounded by fields and ponds. We could not use the fields for sports, because of the risk of damaging the cap, but we could certainly walk the grounds, and sit on pond-side benches, watching the geese.

    •  That is a great (3+ / 0-)

      recovery of the plant.  Thanks.

In Danbury, CT, which used to be the hat manufacturing center of the U.S., the contamination was mercury.  In our clock manufacturing towns -- Thomaston (Seth Thomas), Waterbury and someplace else I can't remember -- the contamination was radium -- glow in the dark dials.

Both areas have been contained and used again for businesses and even apartments.
