My husband and I were poor while he was going to college.  We only had his GI bill.  I was lucky to get a job at sewing factory that took pity on me because I could not sew worth a damn.  Women there could make a decent salary and the factory was not a horror show like the ones in third world countries.  I suppose that sewing factory is way gone now, moved to a third world country because American were just getting paid a little too much.  NAFTA changed a lot and I believe for the worse for many, not better.  Good paying jobs are gone for many poor whites and AAs.  It looks like service jobs in fast food places are the new jobs.  The president keeps talking about computer jobs, but Facebook, and Google are trying to get workers from overseas instead hiring American workers.  I am for immigration reform, but I would like to see more protections for high tech jobs for Americans here already.
