When the public is pushed so far, and when they feel so helpless and unable to change and correct a government department gone rogue, that department is inciting revolution.

I have little doubt that the people involved are either self-justifying ("but if it helps us catch just one terrorist") or pulling the Eichmann defense ("I'm just following orders/doing my job"). Neither wash. In a totalitarian state, sure, but not in America.

Just because we can, we do. Because it's technically possible to make Big Brother a reality, someone will try to do it. That's why we need an active, involved electorate – and that's why we work to motivate and organize the public. Sometimes they respond, and sometimes they just watch American Idol. NSA is counting on American Idol-ism.

Morally, and on a patriotic basis, we have an obligation as Americans to keep the pressure on and stop this sort of thoughtless nonsense.

Just because it's technically possible doesn't mean we will let them do it.

To save your life read "Pity The Billionaire" by Thomas Frank, and "Winner-Take-All-Politics" by Jacob S. Hacker and Paul Pierson. Then read more books.

They're trying to get people to talk about the smallest sites. Get them lost in waffling over details about what small sites can do.

And it's worked: look at the comment threads. No discussion of the big sites - the ones that really matter.
