  •  I think the team of rivals approach is valid... (0+ / 0-)

Get as many smart people as you can, from a variety of backgrounds and viewpoints. Makes sense...

The problem is that we're not really getting smart people, and they don't really have much in the way of differing viewpoints and backgrounds.

...Team of Rivals has some validity (although Lincoln used it as much to weaken his rivals' power as he did to get their ideas) by putting them nearby. Remember the LBJ dictum: "Better to have them inside the tent pissin' out than outside pissin' in."

But the rivals ought to include, for a Democratic president the entire spectrum of Democrats among the team. Have we got that in this administration? I say we don't although some Cabinet members or Cabinet-level officers have been pretty darn good and a few new ones seem as if they will be too.

Most people, however, don't know more than a couple or three of these appointees or have a clue about their political views or what effect their politics have on what they do in their high posts.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.
