  •  g'day all; it appears when I went on vacation (11+ / 0-)

that the remainder of sanity belonging to the US also went on vacation, evidently never to return.  I note a news report that several more college GOP types have begun "White" Student Organizations to celebrate their "European" ancestry and heritage (ignoring the great diversity of various groups in Europe) all the while arguing that they are not racist but "racial".  It appears their critics are racists.

Then over on Kos' front page I note the discussion on who "owns" Jesus and I always thought the US had taken adverse possession from the Brits (assuming we are referring here to the myth and not any historical individual)

Small bit of sanity is the police chief who was advocating armed insurrection has been suspended pending an investigation.  However, that bit of sanity is obviated by the large number of investment articles that conclude that there are currently no investment instruments which provide any sort of return without an inordinate amount of risk (yep, more exotic than derivatives)  except maybe rental property, if you can identify undervalued real estate, rehab it yourself, finance it yourself, and then find higher echelon renters to keep it occupied (and ignoring the traditional problems with both real estate and with being a landlord).  Final insult is the parting shot by analysts that so long as banks pay 0% for their funds, they have no incentive to either loan money or to borrow money but at the same time, simply stuffing your money in your mattress makes no sense.

Upshot is that these highly compensated analysts have no more idea what to do than I do and I screw up for free.  Like I said, sanity has taken a vacation and I returned from mine too soon

    •  Being a landlord can suck. (7+ / 0-)

We rented out DH's house when it didn't sell. The two tenants that were "friends" or the girlfriend of a friend were the WORST.

The best were a nice couple who did lease-to-own, and started rehabbing the basement. It had been unfinished. Sadly, he was a minister for a local church, and got reassigned :( We finished the basement and put the house on the market again. It sold :-)

My friend Lisa is doing precisely that: finding undervalued properties, rehabbing, and renting. She is doing very well. She had to sell her dental practice after damaging her arm pulling a tooth :( She's a smart, tough cookie, though. One of her former employees broke into her house (Climbing a tree to an open second-floor window) looking for drugs. Lisa wrestled her to the floor and tied her up :)

      •  I am slowly moving towards that (8+ / 0-)

though I am going to depend on daughter to do much of the leg work.  Friend of hers thought it would be great for me to buy her home which was being repo-ed until I explained to daughter that income from a property must include mortgage payment (or opportunity cost) + taxes + maintenance + ROI to work.  Her buddy cannot meet current mortgage payments while her home is underwater from unpaid taxes, medical bills and defaulted mortgage.

        •  Don't remember if Lisa is buying (8+ / 0-)

foreclosures and/or short sales. Think so. She looks for single-family 3- or 4-bedroom houses in areas where rental prices are stable. And rentals are in high demand. I think her plan is to have most tenants rent-to-own as time goes on. Right now the rental market is tight and so is housing. Inventory is very low.

FYI: She recommended Urine Rx for getting pee out of subfloors :-) You buy it online. She's bought some VERY trashed houses. Pee was the least of the problems. Some people ripped out light fixtures, took the appliances, the cabinets, even the toilets. Smh.

    •  Welcome back! (7+ / 0-)

I hope you feel rested up enough to deal with all of the recent nonsense the world has placed at your door.

    •  Welcome back entlord! (8+ / 0-)

I hope you enjoyed your vacation! Don't let all the idiocy going on in the world freak you out. And yes, DKos is seeing a sudden influx of trolls and troll like behavior. They seem to be preparing for the next election cycle a little early, sowing dissent and trying to slow us down. The key is not to let them ;). I'm just trying to decide who are the 3 Billy Goats Gruff who get to be fed the trolls!

      •  I'll be one =) (8+ / 0-)

I'm really nice unless/until someone pisses me off =) I suggest CG and broths, who gave our squirrelly one a good butt-kicking in a most polite manner. Or Caedy =)

I have been running across quite a few.  One of them today was trying to plant the seed that the courts was going to pick apart ACA.  Because of the state courts and week defense of ACA by Obama, there would be nothing left for the GOP to get rid of after they take over both houses in 2014.  It made me chuckle at how obvious this concern troll was.  Krugmen this week wrote in the NYT that there is going to be tons of turmoil in the next several months because the GOP has not been honest about that they have lost the battle on the ACA and that it is the law of the land no matter what they do.  Maybe that is what is motivating or causing the early trolling.  It is a shame that trolling has to spill over to no pie zones.
