  •  Wllliam seems like a nice young man (6+ / 0-)

Prince William seems like a nice young man who married a lovely woman--- and he even served his country part time as a member of its air force.  But, his family is hardly a model of hard work and monogamy.  They are supported by massive government subsidies and their main function in life is to dress up in colorful outfits and go around cutting ribbons at openings.  They tend to have a hard time staying married.

Aside from Princess Kate, who married into the fanily, only the most rebellious Mountbatten-Windsors have ever held down anything resembling a real job.  (I can only think of two: William's somewhat rowdy brother Prince Harry and Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips who refused to even accept a title of nobility.)

William's position in the RAF is full time duty. He works on rotating shifts allowing for days at a time on 24 hour duty and then several days off when he carries out royal duties/appearances. Harry is also on full time military duty and has done two deployments in Afghanistan with his unit. All three of the Queen's sons served in the military on full time duty as well.
Prince Edward, the Queen's youngest son, worked for a time in a film/television production company and his wife continued to work full time for a time after their marriage. However, being royal brings conflicts of interest and perceptions of favoritism which ultimately resulted in neither of them continued.
Princess Anne's children, Peter and Zara Phillips do not have royal titles due to their mother and father (Anne's former husband Mark Phillips) declining titles for their father upon their marriage, not because they themselves chose not to have them. Zara has royal patronages, carries out some royal engagements and has no actual paying career other than recently putting her name on a line of equestrian gear. She has devoted her energy to a competitive equestrian career. Peter Phillips does have a regular job as a manager for the Bank of Scotland and carries out no royal duties.
