I imagine your idea of a freighter to S. America is as realistic an idea as any other.  A year from now will be the early part of 2014 mid-term craziness.  Will be interesting to see if still a story then, and if so, how it plays.

equipment.  That stuff almost surely goes from Russia to Venezuela by ship; very likely under heavily armed guard.  It wouldn't be crazy to have a Russian Navy ship in escort.  I can't imagine we'd try to interfere; it would be tantamount to piracy.

If Snowden came along on such a ship, Russia would probably just ask him to wait a decent interval after arriving in Venezuela to show his face, so it wouldn't be too obvious how he got there.

We're all pretty strange one way or another; some of us just hide it better. "Normal" is a dryer setting.

Snowden could buy a cheap cell phone, make a few calls to his friends or family in the US so the NSA knows he's really using it, and then put it on a ship bound from Russia to South America -- just the phone, but turned on and charged up.  (The Administration has been so spastic about him, they just might send the US Navy to stop and search the ship.  What we did to the plane carrying Evo Morales, the President of Bolivia, was similar.)

Then buy another, and do the same.  Then maybe several phones, and start using them to leave recorded messages on some phones in the US.  Then a message in Snowden's voice, recorded, to leave on answering machines.

If a few months down the road every ship leaving a Russian port carried one of those phones, he could also be on one of those ships.  Could the NSA guess which one?
