    Part of the problem is that the self-published writer is often too close to/involved in the work to recognize the typos and infelicities of prose, or the places where things are vague b/c they know in their head what the character is thinking/feeling/doing but the rest of the world is clueless b/c that info is still in the writer's head, not on the page.

    That's what editors are for. ;-D
