Duke Energy Florida told state regulators Thursday it was canceling its attempt to license, build and operate a two-plant nuclear-power complex in rural Levy County, 90 miles northwest of Orlando — a nearly 7-year-old project whose projected costs had continued to balloon in recent years.

Instead, the St. Petersburg-based unit of Duke Energy Inc. — the largest electric utility in the Orlando area — said it would build or acquire power plants that run on natural gas, now the main source of electricity in Florida.

Others have simply gotten old. I prefer to think I've been tempered by time.
