    and search for 'OIC' which stands for Offer in Compromise. The first result is the complete packet for the process those companies are offering to do for you.

    Last I checked, most OICs are not accepted by IRS, though many are. Which figures, since many people with resources will try not to pay their taxes.

    BTW, anyone on fixed income or unemployment, or in a medical emergency, can probably go into a status called Currently Not Collectible, in which you continue to owe and penalties and interest accumulate, but IRS takes NO collection action until your income improves. Even if that's forever.

    Also, btw, IRS does not report bad debts to the credit bureaus. The bureaus take note of IRS prosecutions, but they don't know about simple back taxes.
